Even Therapists See Therapists: a Lesson in Seeking Advice from the Experienced

Therapists Are Never Alone and Business Owners Shouldn’t Be Either

PsychFusion is a private practice coaching service – essentially, a professional mentor and business coach for therapists. We are a team of therapists that have all started their own private practice and know how to help other therapists leave public health, launch their careers, and reach their professional and personal goals.

We act as a mentor, a business coach, and a support system.

We provide the information that your clinical work likely did not prepare you for. How to take your skills as a therapist and counselor and turn them into a business.

Yet, one of the questions we often receive is: Why do I need you?

Why should I contact a professional private practice coach?

What can I learn from you that I don’t already know, or can’t research myself?

Good question!

Short answer: If you can, then great! We hope you have a thriving practice.

But most people are not where you are. Most people do not know how to take that first step, or the second, or the forty seventh. Private practices have the potential to be wildly successful, but it can also be hard, and many fold within a year if they do not get the right amount of help.

Still, the easiest way to understand why you should consider a private practice coach is because you already do this – not with business, but with therapy.

Most therapists have therapists.

You Know All About Psychology – Why Do You Need a Therapist?

You were trained in the field of psychology. You know how CBT works. You’re familiar with cognitive diffusion. You have your own ideas and techniques that you’ve used or thought about for how to deal with anxiety, depression, addiction, and other issues.

And yet…

Statistically, you have probably seen a therapist yourself – or at least strongly considered it. Though no one knows the exact number, estimates show that as many as 60% to 80% of therapists either currently or have in the past seen therapists themselves.

Why would someone that deeply knows and understands psychotherapy see a therapist themselves?

  • Because we know how useful and important it is to have professional guidance from someone else.
  • We understand how much we benefit from a second opinion or new perspective that can help us consider things we haven’t before.
  • We understand accountability. We know that a big part of a person’s recovery is the accountability they have, including with their therapist.
  • We know that we benefit from someone to talk to, bounce ideas off of, and help us with things so that we don’t have to do everything ourselves.

Could you look in the mirror and give yourself a psychological treatment? Maybe. It might not be very good but you can do it. Should you? No.

You know this. That’s why you’ve probably seen a therapist before. I remember even being taught how important it was to get a therapist myself if I’m going to work in mental health. There was a LOT to unload.

Okay – So I Know Therapists Need Therapists. What Does This Have To Do With You?

So let’s recap. You are a therapist. You are an expert at therapy. Yet you still are, at least statistically, likely to pay and work with a therapist for yourself to make sure that you’re in your best mental health.

Now you want to be a business owner.

Would it not make sense to work with another professional business owner to help you launch your business? Someone that is not only a business owner, but also has started and launched their own private practice?

  • You have someone to answer your questions, providing guidance and feedback.
  • You have someone that can keep you accountable.
  • You have someone that can help you stay motivated towards your goals.

You have someone on your side that you can turn to for your questions, your paperwork, your tools, and even – in some ways – the stress that goes along with them.

I am a therapist. I have seen therapists. I am also a private practice owner. Now I see other private practice owners, and those that would like to be private practice owners.
