It’s here again. The new year. 2025 is around the corner, and if you’re like me, this one feels a little bit different.
There’s a lot we can point to, from the state of the world to the things happening at home, but something about this year feels like it’s going to be different – it NEEDS to be different.
Maybe what you need is a New Year’s Resolution.
Most people I talk to these days do not make New Year’s Resolutions anymore because they’ve become so cliché. We know that many people do not stick with them for very long. We also know that a “resolution” is often not enough. We actually have to have the resolve. It has to come from within.
But the thing is that it is still possible to have a New Year’s Resolution that achieves your goals. In fact, I would argue that there is one resolution that can help you achieve almost all common resolutions.
What You Gain From Starting Your Own Practice
Starting your own private practice has an opportunity to help you achieve all of the New Year’s Resolutions that many of us seek to achieve. It has the ability to help you with all other common resolutions, often in ways you may not realize.
Let’s list off some of the most common resolutions and talk about why starting your own private practice is the resolution that makes all other resolutions more attainable.
The most common New Year’s Resolutions are (in no particular order):
- Save/Make More Money
- Exercise More
- Spend More Time With Family (Work/Life Balance)
- Sleep More
- Take Care of Your Mental Health
- Learn a New Skill or Hobby
- Travel More
- Pursue a Career Ambition
I know I’m a private practice coach, but just looking at this list, it’s easy for anyone to imagine the ways that launching your own private practice would help. But let’s talk about them anyway:
- Save/Make More Money – Those with a successful private practice make more money than those that work in public health. This is almost universally true, as you can set your rate and, as a business owner, most of the revenue that comes in goes directly to you. Should you ever grow your practice into multiple therapists, you can eventually create a successful and sustainable business that will continue to earn you money in the months and years ahead.
- Exercise More – Those in public health often work very problematic hours, rarely with the time they need to commit to any type of gym or exercise. When you set your own schedule with a private practice, you can have “me” time scheduled in for walking, the gym, and more.
- Spend More Time With Family (Work/Life Balance) – Owning your own private practice means that you decide when you work and how much. It means that, during slow days, you can schedule “day dates” with your partner, or make sure that you’re always able to pick your child up from school, or make yourself available for important family functions. You’re not stuck with someone else’s schedule.
- Sleep More – Without the long, arduous hours of public health, you can get more sleep and take care of yourself in ways that are often not possible when you work in public health and are forced to work late nights or early mornings, sometimes back to back.
- Take Care of Your Mental Health – I’m not going to tell you that running your own private practice is “easy,” but I am going to tell you that it is highly unlikely to burden your mental health the same way that public health does. It will make it easier for you to feel like you have control over your life and mental health, avoiding many of the stresses that you had at your previous job.
- Learn a New Skill or Hobby – Any time you sleep better, take better care of your mental health, and have more free time, it is easier to learn a skill or a new hobby. Putting all the benefits you’ve already had together often means that you are in a far better position to take on other goals.
- Travel More – When you set your own schedule, you can vacation when you want to, where you want to, for as long as you want to. Of course, your clients will still need care, so it may not be possible to vacation *all* the time. But you will be better able to do things like look for great deals on travel and book those, or schedule your time to line up with other friends and family. That makes traveling more a much easier process.
- Pursue a Career Ambition – Lastly, for many people working in mental health, starting a private practice was always a career ambition in some form. Many people studied mental health related topics specifically so they could be therapists someday. Why not now?
These are the most common New Year’s Resolutions, and as you can see, each and every one of them can be achieved by starting your own private practice and making the decision to switch from public health to something YOU own.
The Next Steps for the New Year
New Year’s Resolutions do not have to be a silly cliché. Part of the reason that they have fallen into that trap is because many people take on goals without the drive, ability, and energy needed to obtain them.
But making a change like starting your own private practice is just the underlying difference that you need to help you achieve not only whatever resolution you already picked out, but ALL the resolutions that people tend to make this time of year.
Make this new year something special.
Make it different in ways that last far beyond 2025.
